Art Night Encinitas is a community event that will be held the following Saturdays from 5:30-8:30pm: March 4, June 3, September 9, and November 18. The event began 10 years ago, and the origin of the story starts with local artists asking to display their art in the glass showcases at City Hall. Soon after, the Art Encinitas Commission came up with the Art Night Encinitas idea, providing local artists with a great opportunity to exhibit their art at several city buildings.
I got the pleasure to speak to Kathleen Lees, a City of Encinitas Arts Commissioner, sadly this will be Kathleen's last term. She has had the blessing of working on the commission for the past six years. Kathleen has no shortage of art in her everyday life. As an art dealer and consultant, she is the perfect woman to choose which art should be shown during the event and why. “What does the project need?” she asks herself, “What would please those looking at it and what would work with the event itself?” Watching her speak about art was a beautiful thing, something you can tell she is so passionate about and wants to only continue to share it with the community. “I have a policy..” she said, “and that is to fill all the empty walls.” And fill those walls she did, for three months to be exact.
The art that is showcased at Art Night Encinitas stays up for three months at City Hall, The Community Center, the local Encinitas Library, Bliss 101, ICA and Artists Colony. To get from one place to another, attendees can take the shuttle. At each location, you will find a shuttle stop, beginning at the Encinitas Library, and ending at the Institute of Contemporary Art. All you have to do is hop on the shuttle and travel to the next exhibit! The event itself includes many community members and volunteers. With the help of the librarians, participants get a tour of the artwork displayed in the library itself. Local bands play live music all night long and the exposure the artists get is unmatched. The artists themselves attend the event and answer any and all questions one might have about their art. The event is held in the evening, lighting up the town with live music, lights, and real art. “It’s a terrific opportunity for the local artists to get exposure,” Kathleen told me, “people want art, real art.” Encinitas Art Night is free, open to the public and gives people the opportunity to travel to each location by bus! I myself cannot wait to attend and be filled with a sense of community, seen through the eyes of local artists!
