We are so excited to welcome Sons Studio to the Leucadia 101 Mainstreet Association! Scroll down for a short Q & A with local artist Tait Hawes about his personal artistic journey, bringing organic line-work and color to your home.
- Are you from here?
I'm originally from Portsmouth, NH and York, ME. My parents were divorced so I split time between the two houses and towns. My wife and I moved to LA in 2003 and then had an opportunity to move to Leucadia in 2015.
"Our prints are a visual diary of sorts. Tait is surrounded by his subjects and each piece is inspired by his personal connection to our environment. From the plants that he sits with daily in our house, foraged flowers from Christine and our boys, to the surfers who inspire him. Tait spent years studying and working on his technical skills as a painter and illustrator, but now what brings him the most joy is not having to make a perfect mark. Gestural, intuitive, lights and darks. His goal is to make art that emotes a feeling and inspires, but that is also accessible to everyone. We hope to bring happiness, laughter, love, kindness and a bit of rebellion to your home."
- What are your top favorite things about Leucadia?
Agave Birria, Ironsmith Coffee, all the beaches, and the smell of eucalyptus
- How long have you been a painter?
I started painting in college sooooo 25 years? Growing up it was all drawing and pen and ink - What inspires your style?
David Hockney, Jenny Saville, Jonas Wood, Barkley Hendricks, James Turrel, Doug Aitken, Ellsworth Kelly, Kehinde Wiley, Barry Mcgee, on and on. My boys. My wife. Movies. Music. Children's books.

Work, work, work. 10,000 hours. Make it for you. Don't be afraid. Promote yourself. There are no rules. There is no "right" way to do it. - Top 5 favorite songs at the moment?
