Caves is just like your classic, specialty wine shop with an added twist - they don’t have a physical location. They operate their shop entirely online, providing free local delivery to their customers. They have over 125 wines to offer from around the world, with the majority of the wines falling in the $10-$30 price point.
In addition to the their regular selection of wines, Caves also offers a great monthly wine club subscription!
Cave's Wine Club is different from most wineries because they get to know each member's interests and taste preferences; giving wines based on that each month. So, if you're a Cabernet Sauvignon drinker who hates Sauvignon Blanc then they don't give you bottles that will just sit on the shelf. Husband & wife team, Gavin and Amy can discover what you like and can therefore introduce you to wines, with a similar flavor profile to what you like.

I was born in England but grew up in Del Mar, graduated Torrey Pines High School and Cal State San Marcos. Amy grew up in Rancho Cucamonga but has lived in SD since she was in her teens.
- What sparked your interest in wine?
I got interested in wine by accident. I was actually in London studying for my masters in journalism and took on a serving job at a wine bar to make some extra cash. I didn’t know much about wine then but I quickly learned a lot and really fell in love with it all. I ended up staying at the wine bar, eventually becoming their beverage manager. When Amy and I met she had been in hospitality for a while and was interested in wine. The two passions meshed nicely!
- What was your favorite part of the process of making wine?
My favorite part about making wine is getting back to the cellar with all the fruit and starting to process it all - destemming, crushing, pressing and eventually getting the wine into tanks/barrels, etc. for fermentation.
- What's the most difficult part?
The most difficult part is picking! It can be exhausting work that involves long days. That, and the cleaning. There is so much cleaning involved in the winemaking process but it’s really important to make a good wine.
- What does "Old World" mean?
Old World is a term used in wine-speak which essentially means any wine from Europe. The opposite being New World, which relates to wines from outside Europe (USA, Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, etc.)
- What's your current favorite wine at the moment?
Favorite wine at the moment… that’s a tough one. I really like the Colleleva Lacrima. It’s a bit of an unknown Italian red wine that is just so good. Dark and moody with tons of floral characteristics yet light in alcohol.
And for a white I love the Rafael Palacios Louro. It’s a Spanish white wine from the region of Galicia that is fermented in large oak barrels and spends a little time on the lees to give it some richness. For the white burgundy lover it’s a great exploration into something a little different but a little familiar.

Gavin and Amy love introducing people to new wines from around the world that are made by quality winemakers. All of their wines have an organic lean to them, which is more of a happy accident than a full intention. While they aren't a "Natural Wine" shop, Caves just believes in wines that are made with care and passion - and those more often than not end up using organic and biodynamic practices.
